Guinea Pig Personalities

If you’re looking for a small pet with a big personality, you’re in the right place. Guinea pigs have a lot of personalities and little quirks.

Guinea pigs have huge personalities and as you find yourself standing there watching your pig they will race around the cage, exercise or play with other pigs.

You may end up with a guinea pig that’s a little more leisure focused and easy going but most guinea pigs are energetic and curious.

Five Personality Types of Guinea Pigs

There are five main personality traits and types for guinea pigs:

  1. Lazy and Easygoing – this type of guinea pig prefers to curl up in a soft hammock or fleece bed. As this guinea pig gets more comfortable with you they will want to snuggle and will likely fall asleep in your arms.
  2. Energetic and Curious – this type of guinea pig prefers exploring inside and outside of their cage. This guinea pig will require extra time out-of-cage and may look for you to rearrange their cage or get them new things every now and then.
  3. Social and Outgoing – this type of guinea pig is great for kids and other pets. These guinea pigs like to be held a lot more often and crave attention from their owners. You’ll want to play and hold this guinea pig every day to build a strong bond.
  4. Shy and Affectionate – this type of guinea pig is harder to tame than others and will require more time to build a bond. It’s a good idea to spend more time holding and playing with this guinea pig so they open up.
  5. Skittish and Shy – this type of guinea pig will take quite a bit of time to warm up to you. Don’t feel hurt if the guinea pig runs when you try to grab them. This type of guinea pig isn’t the best for kids and you’ll need a lot of patience.

Guinea Pigs with the Best Personality

If you’re looking to buy or adopt a guinea pig you’ll want to find one that fits your lifestyle.

The American Guinea Pig has one of the best personalities out of all guinea pig breeds. These guinea pigs are great for kids and at-home living.

The Abyssinian and Peruvian Guinea Pigs are more social and outgoing and are great for kids who are energetic too. These guinea pigs are great for daily play and out-of-cage enjoyment.
