Habitat & Housing

Even though guinea pigs are small they do require plenty of space to exercise and live comfortably. The more space you can provide your guinea pig the better their quality of life will be.

The minimum cage or hutch size you should use is 30 inches by 36 inches for one guinea pig and is the bare minimum recommended. Guinea pigs are highly social animals so most people often get two. The sides of the guinea pig cage should be at least 12 inches high.

Keep in mind most cages and hutches marketed for pet owners are way too small.

What Size Guinea Pig Cage Do You Need?

If you have one guinea pig you should have a 30″ x 36″ cage as the bare minimum.

If you have two guinea pigs you should have at least a 30″ x 50″ cage as the bare minimum.

If you have three guinea pigs you should have at least a 30″ x 62″ cage as the bare minimum.

If you have four guinea pigs you should have at least 30″ x 76″ cage as the bare minimum.

Benefits of Good Housing for Guinea Pigs

A roomier cage for your guinea pig will give you and your pig advantages. A larger enclosure is one of the basic types of enrichment you can provide. Guinea pigs can live 5 to 7 years and can become bored or depressed without adequate stimulation.

A larger guinea pig cage will give your guinea pig more room to exercise. Exercise for a guinea pig is critical to help them not develop medical conditions such as heart disease or diabetes.

Best Place for Guinea Pigs

After you’ve selected the right cage or hutch for your guinea pig you’ll need to figure out the best location for your guinea pig in the home.

You will need to consider things like temperature for your guinea pig, activity levels for the area and overall noise.

Guinea pigs prefer an ideal range of 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, or 18.33 to 23.88 degrees Celsius. You should place their cage away from strong heat sources as guinea pigs don’t sweat and too much heat can cause a stroke.

You should try to keep your guinea pig near your family and the activity of the house. Guinea pigs love being active and benefit from more attention, especially being cuddled.

You should avoid places where there will be loud noises, such as near speakers or the television. Guinea pigs do have sensitive hearing and too much noise can make them go deaf.
