With their various roles and purposes, understanding these animals is very important. One way to do it is to understand the different Guinea Pig Sounds and there various meanings.
Here are various Guinea Pig Noises and what they tell you.
- Wheeking sound. It means “Feed Me.” Wheeking sounds are like a long and loud whistle or squeal. Sometimes guinea pigs make this sound to express excitement or a call for attention from their owner.
- Purring sound. This expresses excitement and happiness or could also mean annoyance. Purring Guinea Pig sounds usually have different pitches. Deep purr means they are contented, comfortable and are happy. However if your pet is motionless and creates a higher pitched purr toward the end, it means they are annoyed, fearful and uncertain about something. Additionally, if it is a much deeper purr or the sound is more like a rumble, this is a noise from a romancing male and sometimes by female Guinea Pig. This is usually accompanied by a mating dance.
- Shrieking. This is a Guinea Pig Sound characterized by a high pitched squeak that is piercing to the ear. It signifies fright, pain and a call of alarm. You better check your pet when you hear this sound because it is more likely that something is wrong with it.
- Teeth Chattering. This is a sign of an agitated, upset and angry Guinea Pig. It is an aggressive vocalization accompanied by a show of teeth. This is more often observed when these animals are first introduced to one another. But when they chatter at you, it means you should back off and keep your distance.
- Whining or Moaning. Guinea Pigs will make a whining sound when they are disturbed by other Guinea Pigs while resting. They also whine at humans to express their dislike on what we are doing on them.
- Muttering. This can also be described as a chut. They make this noise to express contentment and that they are relaxed.
- Chirping. This is a rare sound among Guinea Pig Sounds. Chirping sounds like a bird singing. It remains to be least understood to this day.
