Guinea Pig Cages

Once you decide to invest in a guinea pig, now you have to get the supplies. Domestic guinea pigs live in cages. Mostly the cages that guinea pigs live in have the metal cage but the bottom is solid metal. The cages with the wire mesh on the bottom are not recommended because they can get what they call a bumble foot, the bottom of the cage can cut their feet.

On the bottom of the cage is usually layered with newspapers and then wood or cedar shavings are out down to cover the newspaper. Guinea pigs like to nest ion the shavings, to make themselves comfortable. Don’t be alarmed if they eat the shavings it won’t hurt them at all. The more popular type of bedding used these days are organic shavings, aspen or hemp.

The new popular bedding is still using the newspaper as a liner but try using fleece to bed them. Fleece is cheaper than the standard bedding and said to be more comfortable. Cleaning the cage can be pretty gross but easy if you line the bottom part of the cage with a thin piece of saran wrap or foil to make cleaning easier. Make sure you use enough to fit the liner in snuggly so the guinea pig can’t eat it.

Some people use wood cages, they is not a good idea because guinea pigs could eat the wood and get splinters in their paws or their throats when they eat it. Plus the clean up will not be easy. Make sure they are comfortable and have plenty of water.
