Common Aliments of the Guinea Pig

Diarrhea and or Constipation: with guinea pigs it can be one or the other kind of when it rains it pours situation. If your guinea pig is experiencing diarrhea for more than a day it could be a sign of another medical condition. While constipation is another issue, this can be caused by lack of green vegetables in their diet or not enough water.

Worms: just like puppies, guinea pigs can come down with a case of worms, you will know if your pet has worm by checking their stool, if you see white lines in the stool, they have worms. Worms are treatable and can be taken care of by a vet.

Bumble Foot: this term refers to the inflammation or infection of the foot caused by the wire mesh on the bottom of the cage. This is also treatable with antibiotics see your vet.

Dental Care: guinea pigs have dental problems like any other pet, but not to worry they have about 20 teeth that will come in, unfortunately there are no cures or treatment when a guinea pig has a toothache.

Eye Infections: If your pet has running discharge coming from their eyes or if they are sore they may have an infection, this is treatable by drops check with your vet.

Bladder and Kidney Problems: you may notice that your pet may be having trouble urinating, this may be due to lack of water and lack of proper nutrients in their diet. Add more fruits and vegetables and make sure their water bottle is always full and functional.
